Hannity manipulates Strasbourg speech to claim ‘Obama attacks America’

Obama’s ‘town-hall’ speech yesterday in Strasbourg before 2,000 French and German students had an immense impact in different ways all around the globe. The White House announced today that NATO is committing to 5,000 more troops in Afghanistan, following Obama’s call for a greater alliance role in that war. A full-scale riot in Strasbourg by anti-military and anti-globalization protesters has led to a violent reaction from thousands of armed riot police, and the situation remains unstable.

But unlike NATO and the anti-military rioters, Sean Hannity didn’t think that Obama’s real speech was spicy enough for his television news broadcast.

Last night, on Fox News’ Hannity, a truncated clip of President Obama’s Strasbourg speech was aired, making it appear that Obama was “blam[ing] America first.” The clip of Obama delivered to the audience by Hannity emphasized America’s failures in global policy in the last eight years. “In America, there’s a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America’s shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” Before airing the video clip, Sean Hannity announced, “And that is our headline this Friday night…Obama attacks America.”

If we don't change our ways soon...

A new report by the Royal Society, chaired by Nobel prize-winning biologist Sir John Sulston warns that world population must be stabilized and consumption in wealthy nations must be reduced or the entire planet is in big trouble. As the report reads: "The number of people living on the planet has never been higher, their levels of consumption are unprecedented and vast changes are taking place in the environment. We can choose to rebalance the use of resources to a more egalitarian pattern of consumption... or we can choose to do nothing and to drift into a downward spiral of economic and environmental ills leading to a more unequal and inhospitable future."
This is the same warning that President Jimmy Carter gave Americans back in the 1970's - but it was ignored when Ronald Reagan came to power with a "more positive" message basically telling Americans we can do whatever we want. And then after 9/11 - Bush told us all we should go shopping and consume ever more.
And now with corporations calling the shots in Washington - long-term sustainability of the planet takes a back seat to short-term profits. If we don't change our ways soon - and embrace clean, alternative energy and educate women around the plant - then we all could be headed for a rough century.
